Talk:Shop
We should probably rename this page to "Service Providers" to match the in-game menu titles. --Jimmcq 04:41, 11 November 2006 (EST)
Should each shop instead have its own page? I think there will be enough content to justify it with merchandise, prices, and levels at which things show up. --Pure 18:50, 12 November 2006 (EST)
I think there is probably enough info out there to warrant each "Service Provider" (shop) having their own page. The question is whether or not anyone wants to take the time to input all of that info. --Jimmcq 19:04, 12 November 2006 (EST)
I can definitely say I have too much to do already, maintenance-wise, but if someone wants to keep it up to date, as they level up, that would be great. It would be nice to have editors that patrol and maintain specific wiki topics, making sure that changes made on pages they're responsible for are appropriate, etc. Should we post a 'Looking for volunteer editors' message or something? --FeralKitty 19:19, 12 November 2006 (EST)
I don't mind putting up any content needed, but I'm not good with formatting. Is there a style guide? --Pure 19:11, 12 November 2006 (EST)
I could give you a hand with formatting. There's a Help:Editing page with most details, but we don't and we now have a style guide per se, for our conventions. One of those haven't-had-the-time things. --FeralKitty 19:19, 12 November 2006 (EST)
When in doubt, look to the Wikipedia:Manual of Style for inspiration. We don't need to follow all of their conventions exactly, but it often makes for a good starting point. --Jimmcq 15:17, 13 November 2006 (EST)
Alright, I'm creating pages for each shop, starting with Costolot's General Store. I'm naming them based on the game menu title. --Pure 00:09, 15 November 2006 (EST)
Shop articles
- The Shop articles (General Store, Ivor Bargain, Paper Pets, Willy Builder, Post Office, ...) need to be tabbed, please, and the tabbed pages need blank tables ready to be filled in with details.) Would you mind taking care of that? --FeralKitty (talk) 20:16, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
- I know little to nothing about the shops in the new game. I'd suggest doing both, and if we find out that it's the exact same merchandise, we can drop the JfF tab. Let's hold off on the category until Jim chimes in about that. He might have an opinion about it and/or what its name should be. In case you hadn't been aware, each cat is supposed to have a catmore to a same-named article, as a part of the Reorg, to keep content off the cat pages. If you look at the Species tree, all its cat arts should be done, as an example. --FeralKitty (talk) 22:01, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
- I suppose there's not that many so we can tag them when we decide. –xenocidic (talk) 22:06, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
- I'll be back later tonight. Are you all set? --FeralKitty (talk) 22:10, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
- Erm yes, should I bother creating shops tabs for Pocket Paradise and if so, should I make them blank or insert the same copy of content from TiP - Standard? See General Store. –xenocidic (talk) 22:24, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
- We'll know the answer in a couple of days. Jim said something about posting a writeup about the game, including how it's different from Classic. It would probably be easier to put them in now, instead of having to do them later. By the way, I was going to move the MiniFAQ, but I don't want to step on your edit. It belongs below the tabs; it's common to all games. See you later... have a nice evening! --FeralKitty (talk) 22:32, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

Ok, the shops are all done I believe. See below for the proposed navbox, within which we could hardcode whatever category we decide sounds best. Vendors sound better to me (after all doc and the helpers aren't really "shops", they're just dudes in your garden), but "Shops" may be an easier word for some readers. Also, if they are called "Shops" in game, then we would have consistency. Let me know what you think. What's next? –xenocidic (talk) 23:27, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
Here's an example with just the shops
Shops or Vendors |
---|
Bart's Exchange · Doc Patchingo · General Store · Gretchen Fetchem · Helper · Ivor Bargain · Paper Pets · Post Office · Willy Builder |
- Alternatively, we could call it Category:Characters and include links to sections on leafos, etc. in the navbox. we would need two "see catmores" but it's better than having two very underpopulated categories (imo). –xenocidic (talk) 23:35, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
I'm not sure there's a need to navigate between one shop and another. What other benefit would there be? --FeralKitty (talk) 03:26, 23 August 2008 (UTC)
- here's one with all the characters... this one could transclude category:NPC or category:Non-player characters , or just simply Category:Characters... or we could use a parameter if we want separate categories for each. i think a single category with two Catmores makes more sense because otherwise the categories will be fairly underpopulated. especially because we don't have separate character articles right now. (but conceivably we may need to in the future, if seedos does different things for different game modes, for example, the characters article may get too long).
Let's go a bit slower with categorizing things. Just because something can be categorized, it doesn't mean it needs to be categorized. I believe Jim's feelings were that he and I didn't overcategorize things. If there's a specific need for the category, let's discuss the need. --FeralKitty (talk) 03:26, 23 August 2008 (UTC)
{{Navbox}} example removed.
Navbox is one of those complex templates that we've decided not to use, due to slowdowns, and the sole existing use of it will be replaced, once all the Species names are known for certain. --FeralKitty (talk) 03:26, 23 August 2008 (UTC)
Again, same answer. Do visitors need to navigate between helpers or NPCs, or are the jump pages suffient to tie things together? --FeralKitty (talk) 03:26, 23 August 2008 (UTC)
- In my opinion everything should have at least 1 category. At present, the vendors and characters do not. As for the navigation box - I think the reason visitors may want to navigate between shops is they may have an excess amount of cash and want to spend it, but not sure where they should. –xenocidic (talk) 04:12, 23 August 2008 (UTC)
While categories are helpful for organization, going overboard isn't helpful. Not every article needs to have a category.
As for navigation, I don't buy that reason. If someone has excess cash, they're not going to turn to the wiki to see what to buy. They're going to be in-game and heading into the shops, because they're probably familiar with the petal navigation, and happen to know/see what shops exist. --FeralKitty (talk) 04:30, 23 August 2008 (UTC)
- Hrm, I guess we have to agree to disagree on that, because I think articles should be categorized in at least one category. As for someone poking around about where to spend money - what about people who are at work/school? They might want to float around looking for stuff to spend choclate on when they get home.
- P.S. Category:Xbox 360 Game should probably be renamed. How about Category:Xbox 360 for anything common content related to Xbox (i.e. Microsoft Game Studios, Xbox Live, etc.). Do we need a category for Category:Viva Piñata: Classic ? –xenocidic (talk) 10:52, 23 August 2008 (UTC)
- I've already asked you to "slow down" with the category discussion. This is definitely not the time to rush in and make changes, sweeping or otherwise, to the categories, before we even know if our understanding, organization, and layout is accurate. Also, we have far more important matters to attend to. Our first focus is making further corrections to article headings, layouts, and/or wordings, based on Jim and others' early access to the games. Once the articles more accurately match the game mechanics, and start getting filled out, the next priority through the end of September or longer, is getting the all content accurately filled in for Std, JfF, and PP, and on building a collection of appropriately-named PV images. Once the content is filled in and we are highly knowledgeable about the game's mechanics and its own organization, then may be more reasonable to look into if or how the categories might need to be changed. --FeralKitty (talk) 12:32, 23 August 2008 (UTC)
