Template talk:Species

This Navbox's article is the entry point from the side navbar, and gets a high number of page hits.

It's certainly not the same form of inconvenience, as the bottom-tab Navbox, so this should not be {{link}}'d under any circumstances.

I've been thinking, we should subst: all the {{link}}'s for the navboxes - but only once we've got ourself properly sorted. for now we can undo the change if it's really slowing things down. –xenocidic (talk) 23:43, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

First, I suggest that we don't do anything until Jim chimes in. Second, it's not ready for subst. The link colors still are wrong. Third, I don't see how subst will help, since you still need 2 #ifeqs to handle the bolding, and that's 120-160 calls per tab, on what are going to be some of the most heavily used pages. People are either going to go there to get info, or go there to add info.

Second, honestly, this is bells and whistles. It's a "Would be nice, but the Navbox works, and people can click the tab and nothing is broken" very low priority thing. There are articles that aren't even tabbed, templates that aren't even done, and that should be my focus. Perhaps it might be better to hold off on trying to "improve" this little thing, until the whole site is ready to go. I've been here for 16 hours and have little to show for today.

I'd left it up to you to revert the changes from Species, and I think perhaps you should trust me a bit since that's an active page. I'm not sure I'd even be happy if it "improved" to a 2x or 1.5x slowdown. If you can click the tab faster than the template could "for you," than isn't it better for it to be faster for everyone?

If Jim says he doesn't care if the site is slower, and he wants the "convenience" of one-click navigation, that's his call. I'm just running out of time, though, to do my work, and I'd prefer to do it on a faster site. For now, I agree that we should get back on track and fix the important things that truly need our attention. In this template under the types of species section, would Fizzlybear belong to any of these categories? I am not certain that it's nocturnal. Should it just be continued to be left out? Thanks, no rush --ImaTestWentBad 01:14, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
