The game features a day and night cycle. As time passes, the leaves in the user interface rotate like the hands of a clock to show time.
A full day will last around 12 minutes of 'real' time. Only three to four of those minutes are night. Many pinata are active during the day and sleep at night, while others are nocturnal meaning that they sleep during the day and are active at night.
Daytime or nighttime also affects when a species might appear in the wild. For example, the Mothdrop appears at night. Other species, such as the Fudgehog, only appear after a certain amount of days have passed.

How can I tell how many game days I've played?
Open your Journal, navigate to Player Awards, and then to Player Status. The Player Status page will display your level, how much money you have, and how many in-game days you've been playing Viva Pinata. The in-game days represent cumulative time spent across all your gardens. View thread
