Regarding variants, a grammatically correct sentence would be an improvement.  Currently, using "...changes its color to a ''color'' ''species''" is saying that you're changing the color to a color that is named after the species.  Writing "''Doing this'' changes it to ''this color or pattern'' would make more sense; alternatively, "''Doing this'' changes the ''species'' to ''this color or pattern''.

I think it's better to leave * off the variants rows, for consistency's sake. Also, the species layout is 80% bulleted items already, so the more we can avoid additional bullets, the better :) Another tip is to just link the first occurrance of an item, and leave the other nearby occurrances unlinked. That way, a visitor isn't visually overwhelmed with too many link choices.
