The Xbox Support site has lots of information on how to connect to Xbox LIVE.
However, you've posted elsewhere that you're on dial-up, and that's far too slow. Don't expect it to work, unless you upgrade your internet service.

You technically can connect to LIVE with dial-up, but you can't really do a lot of things that you'd want to. It's pretty much useless.
I had to live with dial-up for the majority of my life, so I know your pain u_u; I'd suggest upgrading your internet.

There is a Wi-Fi adapter available for the 360. It plugs into the USB port on the back of the console, and you can get them at GameStop (Radio Shack might have them, also)
It's not perfect either, but if there is an open network nearby, or if somone will let you on theirs, it's faster than dial-up, at least.
