DingoMutt

That is a deep pity.

I have a beta, he doesn't look very happy though, he has space... a 1 gal all to himself.

Here is what my guppies look like, they are bi-color snakeskins because their tails change from yellow to white, an intense yellow to a ghastly white, every color in-between.

Say hello to Tiger!

I used to be a fish lover, and I had all kinds, fresh and salt water.

The best time was when I had big fishes, like Clown Knifes and Eels, and Arrowanas.

I even had 10 Piranhas (about 3 inches long) at one point, and it was great watching them chase and bite the feeders.

Piranhas O_O

did they eat your other fish?

GhostGundam
04-04-2007, 07:19 PM
By the time I got the Piranhas, the other big fishes have died due to overheating problems, so it was just those little guys in my 50 gal tank.

It was really hot that time and my water was extremely warm ...

I want to get a 50 gal tank so I can get a HUGE plecostomus!

I saw a big pleco at a fish store, they were surprisingly inexpensive.

GhostGundam
04-04-2007, 07:47 PM
Plecostomus is not that special, get yourself an Arrowana. A silver arrowana (young one) will be probably $30 or so to start, but when it grows larger, it looks extremely cool!

schedar
04-04-2007, 07:49 PM
but...but I like that they suck on the wall!

If I get a 50 gal I will probably get an Arrowana too...will they hurt my plecos?

GhostGundam
04-04-2007, 10:28 PM
If anything, the Plecos will probably suck on the Arrowana and other larger fish, sometimes the Plecos are more aggressive and territorial towards larger fishes.

DingoMutt

mcnugget... If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all. I seriously think that was inappropriate, and I know that guppies are all bones, so you cannot eat them. So please, we are talking about pet fish.

One of my fry died... :( but my female should drop in about 25 days... and I will save them all!

I think one of my favorite freshwater fish was the Killifish. There are many species and some are just the prettiest I can find for freshwater and very easy to maintain. You don't need a large tank or strong filters. With the right PH and softness, and lots of peat moss, they will breed very easily and quickly. Not always easy to prevent the eggs from getting fungus, but if you do succeed, you will get a lot of tiny fries! :)

Cool! A fish thread! My husband and I have salt water fish tanks.

I don't have any good photos of the tanks, but I do have this one shot of Jose, our yellow tail blue damsel, after he provoked the mantis shrimp and got a beating. For a little fish, he sure can be a jerk.

BTW, Jose healed up just fine. He's a tough little fish.

GhostGundam
04-05-2007, 05:32 PM
Yep, damsels are more aggressive than clowns.

I had saltwater fish for a while too, but not as long as the freshwater ones.

I also had newt, salamanders, and turtles.

I worked in some fish stores too for a while. :)

I got a baby butterfly pleco a few days ago and he died ;-;

His name was 343 Guilty Suck.

He lived with me for about a week, then he couldn't stay on the wall and kept floating up to the surface. I hope he didn't suffer.

If you want to breed fish, you cannot go wrong with live bearers. Guppies, Platies, get a trio, and you will have a tank full of fry in a month or two. VERY easy to breed, they just... do. Dropping once a month... oh yeah. No eggs... awesome. And Guppies can have HUGE tails! I will find a pic. ;)

TADA!

Yeah, some are poisonous. They cause swelling and pain, and you can ease the pain by dipping the wound into warm water. I read.

I made videos of my guppies, and I will post them here:D

GhostGundam

Fishes do not play dead as far as I know. They do go into shock for various reasons.

DingoMutt
04-09-2007, 05:52 PM
Very nice `Ponocky.

One of my guppy fry is beginning to show its green coloring, the bit on its sides. I'm so happy! :D I will research fish "playing dead" but I am 99% sure they cannot.

Clown Loaches do this (http://www.aquahobby.com/magic/e_playdead.php), I am sure it isn't a trick, just survival behavior...

Go here (http://www.sciencenews.org/articles/20061028/bob8.asp), it talks about how they "play dead" to discourage predators, still not a trick. Making me correct, and those who agree with me.

mcnugget13
04-09-2007, 05:56 PM
Well that would be a cool trick to teach fish
also can fish jump like a flying fish

DingoMutt
04-09-2007, 06:07 PM

African Butterfly Fishes can jump for food:

or the Flying Fish:

mcnugget13

DingoMutt

Thrasher
04-09-2007, 11:40 PM
Petsmart (or at least the one near me) has vary LIMITED salt water fish. Mostly clowns, clarkies and some damsels. I wouldn't recommend buying them from their, however.

GhostGundam
04-09-2007, 11:51 PM
Flying Fish is not really a fish for captivity. You find those fish in large open seas.

But you can get the African Butterfly which is a freshwater fish. Probably not at PetSmart or Petco though.

mcnugget13
04-10-2007, 07:14 PM

what about................anyine know a place where you can get a afriacan butterfly fish

I'm so excited! I'm getting a new tank for my beta! He is going from a "bowl" which is 1 gal, and non-moving. He is going to a 2 gal, with a hood, and an undergravel filter. So... yeah!

And I am going to get bbs for my fry. :D

Reptox1339
04-14-2007, 01:34 PM
we got a simese fighter and the next day, there were no other fish left in the tank except for him.

GhostGundam
04-14-2007, 10:24 PM
Be cautious about putting in other fishes. Some of them might be drawn to his fancy tail and will start to bite it and cause it to get infected and eventually die.

DingoMutt
04-15-2007, 10:57 AM
I got the tank! I got a different one, its a little bigger. But I have it really nicely decorated, I love it. But I have my male betta, and a pair of cories...

They are living together happily.

Dingo! OMG guess what? My first female guppy, the snakeskin (monarch butterfly coloring), had FRY this morning!!!! It must've happened overnight and when I went in to feed them BOOM they were there! It's so exciting, taking care of fry. I'm currently on my mom's work computer, I have no IM, but we can talk about it later. Didn't have time to count them before but from the looks of it I'd say..16 or about 20! YAY! We're going to Walmart or a petstore soon to get everything they need, for the moment they are in a 1g inside the tank. Aw they're all small and cute :D Okay, well I'll msg you with more today.

PS: Congrats on new tank =D I hope to get a 5g that is only 30 dollars with filter etc. And I have a question too, Which filter is better hood or undergravel? My 10g is hood...

GhostGundam
04-15-2007, 04:43 PM
Undergravel is usually good because it draws the current below the gravel and keeps the water from debris and stuff from flowing all around inside the water. Definitely in your case, for the frys, you will not want Hood filters. They will get sucked in.

For a regular tank, a combo of both would be better, or you can use a Undergravel Filter with the Pump (Powerheads) that sits on top of the Undergravel Filter outflow tubes, this way, you don't need to have an external filter.

External filters are good for easier cleaning, but it would cause the water to evaporate faster than normal since the water is exposed to air.

The Powerhead Filters are good to have for a quiet tank and to take advantage of the powerful water flow for optimal undergravel filtering, however, all debris are trapped by the gravel.

DingoMutt

Well, I am leaving in the morn, and my guppy still hasn't dropped her fry. I am scared they will all get eaten while I am gone. I really hope she drops tonight so I can net them and put them in the breeder net!
