it says that races are important but on mine what ever place you came in the race doesnt matter and you just get points for winning the challenge event. is this a glitch?

Race results do matter, and there's no glitch. If you look closely, you'll see a race bonus (of up to 5 points) added on to your minigame score. The better you do in the race/challenge, the better the bonus.
You'll find more details at the wiki's Racetracks (discussion) article.

If two people came in at a draw in a challenge, the person with the better race standing should end up with more (bonus) points. It's likely that the game gave the correct results, and you've missed some detail that would explain why the game did what it did.
As the link (http://pinataisland.info/viva/Talk:Racetracks) explains, your bonus is lower, based on worse race and challenge results. So, it's possible that someone who scored well in a challenge, ends up with a lower combined score than someone who did well in a race.

you can only get up to 3 points as a race bonus. 3 for first place, 2 for second, 1 for third and 0 for last
