I picked up a couple carving pumpkins at the grocery store this afternoon, but once home found myself at a loss for design ideas. I paced about for a bit scratching my head until it hit me--why not embody my favorite piņata in vegetable form?
Several hours (and spine kinks) later, it was finished--a smashing success, if I do say so myself. It came to me while working on the pumpkin that I might post the finished product on the PI Forums--I've been a regular here for awhile, though I hadn't registered until today. Thought some of you would get a kick out of it.
Link to half a dozen photos (http://www.flickr.com/photos/feanor7/sets/72157602601265516/detail/) of the pumpkin on a Flickr photo album.
Let me know what you think!

That is very cool. That must have taken ages to make it look that good.

Thanks for the kind words, everybody. :)
This was my first shot at a detailed pumpkin carving, and I'm surprised at how well it turned out. I might be entering halo.bungie.org's '343 Guilt O' Lantern' (http://nikon.bungie.org/misc/guiltolantern07.html) contest next. Doubt I'll place, given the amazing talent of some of the artists that enter there every year, but the project itself should be fun.

I'm an artist and I'm impressed! :)

Looks like the Elephanilla pumpkin was nominated as a finalist in Joystiq's Pumpkin Carving (http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/30/joystiq-pumpkin-carving-contest-vote-on-the-finalists/) contest. Go vote for your favorite.

How long did that take? I love it!
I started in the late evening and finished at about 3am. A bit unfortunate, since I was due in to work at 8am that morning. Hehe.
And thanks!
I see jimmcq has been on the ball with the Joystiq contest, unlike myself. Thanks for that! I've been kind of busy this past week and really forgot to check in here or there -- didn't even vote for my own pumpkin! Oops. Qualitatively speaking, I'm not sure my design merited victory (top 10) anyway, given some of the mind-bogglingly detailed artistry submitted at Joystiq -- but big thanks to anyone from here who might have punched in one of the Elephanilla's 119 votes!
Also, anyone who hasn't should go take a look at our own contest (http://pinataisland.info/forum/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=6365)-- from Prof. Pester to smashed pinatas to Galagoogoos and Chewnicorns, the creative response has been terrific.
