Status: Not looking for a mod at this time.

Hmm. I'll take a shot at answering this, in a round-about way :D

Let's start with some ways you don't get to become a mod:

By publicly asking to be a mod. Instantly disqualifies you.
By PMing asking to be a mod. Yep, that doesn't work either.
By getting into trouble with us. Not respecting the rules completely ruins your chances. Those are the top three that weed out most people who are looking for a job being a mod.

Now, how do you get to be a mod? Well, it's very difficult, honestly.

First, we have to need a new mod. 98% of the time, we have enough staff, so we're not even looking for possible candidates.
Second, you have to meet certain qualifications. If we told you what they were, 42% of you would PM us saying that you meet them, instantly disqualifying yourselves, so I'm sparing us in advance from that wave of PMs we'd get. :p
Third, if you got this far, you'd have to pass the "voting." *shudders!* Now, I shouldn't say this, but there's this one mod who rarely votes "Yes." The last wave of ballots had stuff like "Too tall!" "Has a Z* in their name." "Has a nicer sig than mine."

*Z substituted to protect actual letter disliked. ;)I guess there's no easy answer to the question, but if you're looking for general guidelines, live within the rules, keep out of trouble, and never, ever ask to be one :p

Just as a quick addendum, offering free nachos go along way when it comes to some mods, see my Xbox Live motto for reference. :p

I will tell you that occasional use of capitalization and punctuation certainly help meet those qualifications.

Oh, and it doesn't hurt to helpful, friendly, and mature too.
