So are any of you lot in to Forza Motorsport? I've seen the recent 'screen shots' and some video on the 1Up podcast of Forza 2. I'd like to see some good quality video of the game being played. All the recent video seems to be from a camera filming it on a TV. What do you think of what's been seen so far?

ive never played the original one, but the screenshots for the new one look pretty good

If this game delivers that level of Car design customization that Top Gear Rally had, I'll probably end up getting it.

(By customization, I mean being able to hand paint the cars.)

I believe Forza 2 will only support picking decals from a huge range and then colouring them and layering them up on the cars. I don't think you get a paintbrush as such.

That's weird, I remember seeing a picture from the original that had some guy's Halo 2 car. Either those were very specific shapes they have in the game, or you can paint them, because it was the exact H2 logo.

EDIT: But yeah, I do see a point to that. There would be people driving around with porn on their cars.

You might find some MGS owned IP used in the decals, i.e. Halo images. That's just a guess, but might explain what you saw. In the 1Up Podcast they use a 1Up logo on the car.

Any of the custom designs you saw from the first version were made with the pasting and altering of shapes into layers, however you could put up to 100 layers on each panel. I've seen a few that people have done that took them over 60 hours to do.

This is one game I can't wait for, I loved the original and am a big fan of racing games. Having seen some of the screen shots and a bit of footage, it looks amazing

Forza is released tomorrow.
Been waiting a while on this, I plan to be there before opening to make sure I get a copy. :D

Wow, that game looks awesome. My birthday is coming up soon, and I think this is going to be on the top of my list. I will definitely get the package that comes with the racing wheel. I checked on the internet, and one store sold it for 150 USD. Tell me if you find some better deals.

This is the best wheel I've used, only drawback is the vibration.
Alot of wheels have a dedicated power cable for the vibration, this one is powered by the USB on the Xbox making the vibration a little weaker.
The performance more than makes up for it though, almost no deadzone, can be calibrated, rubber grips, good wheel and pedals.

Is this like a racing game that is like no others. What is so special about this game?

As far as I know, this game is extremely realistic, with hundreds of cars and different ways to wreck them. That to me sounds really cool.

Oh, and thanks for the tip about the racing wheel, Trialliar. I was planning on purchasing the XBOX brand, but I never realized how different the quality was. Not to mention the price, which is significantly less.

The Forza demo was stunning but I can't even make it past the first turn (I'm a NFS kinda guy) so I'm leaning more towards DiRT for my next racing game. I'll probably wait for some reviews though since the online for Forza should blow DiRT's out of the water.

PS: Has anyone seen some of the awesome ads for Forza 2 in gaming mags? In one of them you peel back piece of paper (like the perfume samples) and you smell burnt tire rubber!!!

Trialliar
05-29-2007, 08:38 AM
Download the demo first.
DiRT looks like a decent game, but there's some minor quirks that make the gameplay less than it could be.
There is a disclaimer though that says something about the demo not being the same quality as the game, so they will most likely be fixed.

Lensflare

Oh, I have seen an ad like that before. I actually love the smell of rubber, but burnt rubber... not so much.

I guess I will download both demos, which will probably take like 2 hours. Oh well, it's kinda important when you are gonna buy one in a matter of days.

UPDATE: I have played both demos, and here are my reviews:

Forzoa Motorsport 2: Photo-quality graphics with lifelike movements and control. Player can choose a normal car, such as a Lexus or Ford Mustang, or higher-end racing cars with much better performance. Driving skills must exceed those of Need for Speed, for this game requires pinpoint precision and great reflexes.

DiRt: Very fun for the player wanting very responsive handling. This game features both on and off road racing to fuel your desire for jumps and flips. The crashes are extremely realistic; you can hit a tire and watch both your bumper and the tire go sailing off into the distance. Demo is a bit quirky, however. It seems to be frame-by-frame, almost like a slideshow. The disclaimer states that the demo does not reflect overall quality, which means the problems should be fixed.

I hope these help!

We've been playing the Forza 2 demo here with the official wheel and it's pretty good. The official wheel has a dedicated power supply so the feedback is damn strong. Since the demo's appeared there have been many a wheel shaped box arriving here at Rare.

Alright, the release of this game has me totally baffled. At stores such as BestBuy and Blockbuster, the game is available for Pre-Order. However, I have seen a lot of people on my friends list that are playing Forzoa Motorsport 2--not the demo. Is this game available in different areas? I don't understand.

Official release date was yesterday, however some places are a few day behind due to shipping. Mine just came in today.

Excellent game, the full release is much better than the demo.

I'm waiting to pick up this game this weekend, which I must say is a very tough thing to do! I have to discipline myself to get some stuff done around the house this week, because once I pick up this game, I'll be hooked.

The Forza series is incredible!

No matter how hard I try, I crash into the wall of every turn. I have not even finished a race. Does anyone have any tips? This is just about the only thing holding me back from getting this (plus I'm saving up for a Halo 3 Zune!).

Alright. This game puts your racing skills to the test. This is nothing like other racing games, because you have to carefully use the brake, emergency brake, and accelerator in one fluid motion.

The key to successfully executing the turns is all in the speed. If you maintain a high speed then slam on the handbrake, your car will lose control and go into a spinning vortex. If you want to avoid this, hold the brake (LT) and slow down altogether. Speed up gradually through the turn. If done correctly, you should hug the inside of the track, and speed out of the turn.

If you need more help, turn on the guidelines, and follow the other cars. You can learn the most from these two things.

Sorry for double-posting, but I feel like this had to be in a separate area.

I am so fired up (in a bad way) from the fact that the Limited Collector's Edition will not be sold in the United States. You can buy it from Canada, but someone said it would not work on American consoles.

Can anyone confirm this information?

Adding onto my second post, are there any U.S. citizens that have the Limited Collector's Edition? I am so anxious to buy it, but I don't know if I should order the Limited or just stick with the regular.

Another thing to note on cornering is car type.
A front engine, rear drive vehicle will handle differently than a front engine, front drive or a mid engine, rear drive.

In a front engine, rear drive slightly accelerating does increase traction through a corner as LensFlare posted, even more so if it has an open diff.

In a front engine, front drive vehicle though, depending on the weight balance, sometimes it is actually better to gradually decelerate through a corner.
Applying the brakes shifts the weight of the car forward to the front wheels, which is your powered wheels.
This puts more pressure on the front end increasing the peak friction before the tires break loose.

You also have to consider why your losing traction to begin with.
It could be a lack of surface area between your tires and the pavement, which can be increased by wider tires and a negative camber.

Individual tire speed is also another factor in losing traction, with an open diff the side with the least resistance gets most, and sometimes all of the power, causing that side to move forward ahead of the other, resulting in the vehicle spinning. A 1.5 or 2 way diff should help in this case, although it does increase your turning radius.

Weight is also an issue with turning, less weight gives you higher top speed, acceleration and less body roll, but also gives you less peak friction making ires break loose and the brakes lock easier.
In a rear wheel drive this can cause a problem, the wheels of the vehicle will turn, but at too high of a speed the drive wheels can overpower the front wheels and they will actually be pushed sideways instead of the vehicle following them.
Adjusting brake balance can help here, put more braking power to the rear wheels to keep the front from locking and decelerate until about 1/3 to 1/2 way through the turn, then gradually accelerate.
Increasing front downforce can also help here but will lower top speed.

Other things to experiment with would be tire pressure, caster, bound and rebound, ride height, and anti-roll bars.

Very nice, Trialliar. I just painted my BMW with a sick paint job (well, for me that is). I am a graphic design fanatic, but I think I will leave the complex designs to other people. I bid on a Borat 350z for 5k, and won it on the spot! Here is the BMW (keep in mind that is my first, it's no masterpiece):

Looks good Lens, especially for being your first, the Forza vinyl system is not the easiest thing to work with.
You've also nailed the three primary colors; red, yellow, and blue.
http://www.colormatters.com/colortheory.html
Only problem is it's not an Aston Martin. :D

Best thing you can do for complex paint is do the entire car with a very trimmed down version of what you want the end result to be.
No shadows or gradients, can even be a bit choppy and have crooked lines.
Once you have that though, you've got a better idea of what the end product will look like and you can go back and touch up the entire car just a little at a time.
Sometimes it easier to create complex shapes by starting with a square or circle and then cutting it down by placing vinyls the same color as your paint on top of it.
Layer by layer work over the car and slowly evolve it into what your trying to accomplish.

If you working for something a little less complex you can change the look quite a bit just with a simple shadow or gradient vinyl.
Try copying the race flag vinyl you have and then insert the copy just below it, change the color to a darker yellow or an orange and move it a few ticks to the rear and to the left(drivers) side.
It will give you a slightly darker shadow and add some depth to the car.

A complex paint job really isn't all that hard, it just takes time and practice.
The one I'm working on now is a picture of the Wraith, will be a lot of shading and highlighting, hope to finish it this weekend.

UPDATE: I got to work on a new project. I bought a Fairlady Z, and I am giving it a Guitar Hero 2 paint job. As of now, I have gotten as far as finishing the II and the basic structure of the car. It's hard, so it might take me a long time...
