This isn't related to Viva Piņata, so I've moved it from the VP Help section.
It's not recommended or supported, according to the Xbox Live support site.
I suppose you still could do it, but it would be absurdly slow for uploads/downloads, and probably completely unplayable for online games.

Check Xbox.com's support site for details (http://support.xbox.com/en-us/pages/xbox-live/get-started/connecting/default.aspx).

You can do it, but the lag means you can't play multiplayer, with or without Gold.
Here's a step-by-step of how to do it, with pictures:
Right, just because you're on Live doesn't mean you have all the features available to you that highspeed gamers will.
No multiplayer, with or without a Gold account. The lag will make it worthless.
No movie-on-demand. To be specific, a SD movie will take over a week of nonstop downloading.
But you can still:
Download Live arcade games and demos
Download game demos if you wanna wait that long
Update your console and games
Get themes, gamerpics and all that jazz
And you can still access MSN messenger.
