In the past week we have gotten a special little feathery visitor. First of all take note that I live in quiet little subburb where you don't see too many kinds of wild birds, other then the occasional robin, bluejay, at rare times cardinals. Then there are the geese that fly over the seasons they migrate. Well one morning last week I walked outside with my school bag and casually strolled down the driveway on my way to the bus stop, and right out of the bushes next to me flies this duck right in front of me. I was like <...>!? and looked back to the door where my Mom was standing. My face questioning like "WHAT IN THE WORLD IS A DUCK DOING IN OR YARD!?" Well that was a big surprise since like I said, ducks aren't seen around my neighborhood. The biggest surprise is what we found out on Saturday. I was doing chores inside and my lil' sis comes up to me and says that there was something moving in the big bushes next to our porch. Well I went outside and bent down to take a look. All of a sudden this thing was hissing at me. I thought it was a cat but then I realized it was that duck again. We found out that it was a female duck and she had laid 11 eggs in a small nest deep within our bushes.

So otherwise being really shocked we think its really neat to have our special little visitor and her soon to be born children. Its exciting and I can't wait for the eggs to hatch! I also did some research and I think she is a mallard hen, since she is colored a brownish with speckles just like the pic I seen of one. Everyday now I make sure the stray cats don't get near the nest and I lay out some bread for her. I wanted so badly to take pics and upload them for you all to see but I can't get my piece of crud little cheap digital camera to work! So I will tell you all when the eggs hatch and if I get my camera working I will upload some pics.

For now I really want to think of a good name for our little friend, but I don't know any good duck names lol.

That's so weird, I got some ducks that came and visited my pool this weekend as well, I usually never see any ducks. I was like: o.O?

Though it's nothing NEAR as big as having a pregnant duck in your yard

You might want to let your local Department of Natural Resources know... if they are in a neighborhood where the baby ducklings are likely to get run over by a car then they might want to relocate them to a safer area.

That's an awsome story. I love ducks.

Once me and my fiance were driveing and there was a huge line up of cars on both sides of the road, and what do you know. It really was a mother duck and a bunch of little baby ducks following directly be hind her crossing the road. I had seen it on tv a thousand times. I cracked up.

Actually It would be a bad Idea to relocate her until after the eggs hatch. Otherwise she will abandon them and the worl will lose 11 baby ducks. I was raised in the country on 8 acres all creek front property so I have quite a bit of experiance with wild ducks, Geese and the like. We actually let the animals have the back side of our property but recently a guy bought the adjoining property and built a house since I have not seen our resident duck family or our geese. Here are some pics of the part of the property we left to nature. It is so pieceful http://s78.photobucket.com/albums/j108/thumpszilla/Mom%20and%20Dads/

For the safety of the little ducklings we deffinately were thinking about calling someone after they had hatched, since I don't know of any big bodies of water around our neighborhood besides a tiny little creek where only little frogs and lizzards live. The good thing is our neighborhood isn't a busy one so there aren't many cars, but we will relocate them once they hatch.

I liked your story about the ducks, ~*FirefliesAbright*~.

I've seen a few pet ducks in my neighbourhood on my daily walks to school. But your story is different: you found a female duck in your yard about to lay eggs!

I'm kinda thinking right now of a good name for ‘your unique visitor.’ I think it should be something that describes the way you found her.

Here's a picture of a Mallard Hen I found online. It may look something like the one you found.

A duck lived in our backyard for a while. Laid eggs, eggs hatched. We then put the mother and all the hatchlings in a cardboard box and took them to a nearby river, since the chicks can't reach our pool and would have died.

Thanks for the picture! Yes she looks EXACTLY like that! So she must be a mallard.

im ok with ducks just not swans because when i was feeding 1 at 3 years old it ran at me and bit my nose *it hurt* but what if a wolf picks up the sent u cant fend off a pack off wolfs but thats unlikely because the nearest wolf pack to a small neighber hood would be about 5 nights away so thats along way for a wolf pack

I hope ur duck doesnt get killed by wolfs or anything else but it is a posiblity if u live near a forest
