New to the game- how do I talk to seedo?

Hi. I just got the game used (loose DS cart, without instructions or anything), and I was scratching my head trying to figure out how to talk to seedo. I don't want to make him mad by whacking him with the shovel... :( Think an expert might be able to lend me the answer?

Which makes me want to ask rare why in the heck did they call it "talking" to him....Although it kind of also makes me want to poke someone and when they ask me what I am doing say "talking"...I wish I knew someone from rare so I could do that, not to bash rare, I love Banjo-Kazooie and VP. Don't know much of their other games. I do own DKracing, but um....I suck at it. Star Wars ep 1 racing whoops it, sorry. Probably because its the only racing game I can beat my mom on....(didn't use to be that way...XD) Anyways, why does Seedos laugh rather evil like sometimes when you "talk" to him? I notice he doesn't give you things then. Is it true for this game that he will drop weeds if you hit him and steal his seeds?
